Independent Reading Every night
Over the course of this year you are going to be expected to read a variety of books independently as a way to improve your reading. You are expected to read for 30 minutes every night (Monday-Thursday) out of a book that you have selected. You will be tracking your reading throughout the year, and we encourage you to read as many of the DCF book award nominees as you can. We will help you to make choices for books that you may like to read independently but you can also use the chart below to help you choose a just right book for you.

Spelling and Vocabulary Work
Each week, you will be expected to choose 5 words from your reading that are either completely new to you or words that you don't currently use in speech or writing. You will record these words on your personal word log, define them, use them in a sentence, and collect an image that helps you remember the meaning of the word. You will be expected to be able to spell your words by hearing them, as well as be able to define them and use them in a sentence in a weekly partner quiz. Each quiz is worth 20 points!
